We are pleased to announce our representation of American artist Tom Friedman in Asia. Friedman’s work is currently on view as part of the exhibition States of Being at our seasonal gallery in Taipei and will be part of our presentation at KIAF Art Seoul in October. In April 2022, he will have his first solo exhibition in Korea at our gallery in Seoul.
Tom Friedman is a conceptual artist known for his meticulously fabricated work, including sculpture, painting, drawing, video, and installation. For over 30 years, Friedman has investigated the concepts of perception, logic, and plausibility with a strong attention to detail and dry wit. Utilizing an array of sophisticated processes to achieve a seemingly mass-produced appearance, his highly conceptual work engages both maximalist and minimalist aesthetics, as well as recalling those of Pop Art. The artist will continue to work with Luhring Augustine, New York, and Stephen Friedman Gallery, London.
“Art, for me, is a context to slow the viewer’s experience from their everyday life in order to think about things they haven’t thought about, or to think in a new way,” the artist shared.
“Tom’s work touches on my primary interest in the visual arts, which is poetry,” shares Rachel Lehmann. “Using innovative materials to deceive the human eye, Tom is a master at redefining spaces both conceptually and physically. I consider him an inventor, first and foremost, but also an alchemist at heart. I see strong ties between Tom and other artists in our program, including Do Ho Suh, Heidi Bucher, Teresita Fernández, and Nicholas Hlobo, and I look forward to seeing how those dialogues will materialize in the coming years.”
