Public Days: September 23–October 18
For KIAF Art Seoul’s inaugural online edition, Lehmann Maupin will present new and historical works by leading women artists Lee Bul, Mandy El-Sayegh, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Shirazeh Houshiary, Chantal Joffe, Klara Kristalova, and Alex Prager. Featuring a range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and works on paper, this presentation highlights these artists’ commitment to defying traditional formal and conceptual practices and sociopolitical constructs.
Interweaving autobiographical elements into the formalist rigor of abstraction, Mandy El-Sayegh and Shirazeh Houshiary build surfaces in their work that simultaneously embrace and challenge the narrative of modernist painting while creating a strong sense of depth and dimension. El-Sayegh’s work is featured prominently in the Busan Biennale 2020, which coincides with KIAF Art Seoul, while paintings by Houshiary will be included in the inaugural presentation at Lehmann Maupin London on October 5.
By combining figuration with a varied pictorial language, Alex Prager creates complex visual narratives that draw inspiration from art history, advertising, design, and American culture. In contrast, Chantal Joffe and Tracey Emin center their respective practices around personal histories, often focused on intimacy and memory. Joffe is best known for her ability to bring a combination of insight and integrity, as well as psychological and emotional force, to the genre of figurative painting.
Often inspired by natural materials, Teresita Fernández, Klara Kristalova, and Lee Bul invite experiential engagement with their work and the space it occupies. While Lee Bul’s retro-futuristic imagery explores the space between organic and man-made material, Fernández’s choice of medium—such as gold, graphite, and other minerals—carries abundant histories often tied to colonialism, land, and power. Exuding both innocence and horror, Kristalova’s works are based on the human body but take on hybrid forms that incorporate aspects of nature, especially animals, insects, flowers, and trees.
As a group, these artists subvert traditional modes of art-making by imbuing their work with personal perspective while commenting on social or political realities.
