Art Busan & design 2020
BEXCO Exhibition Center 2
55, APEC-ro, Haeundae-gu, Busan, Republic of Korea
VIP Preview: November 5
Public Days: November 6–8
For its inaugural presentation at Art Busan & design 2020, Lehmann Maupin is pleased to present a curated selection from the gallery’s roster of international artists, including McArthur Binion, Lee Bul, Billy Childish, Mary Corse, Teresita Fernández, Nicholas Hlobo, OSGEMEOS, Lari Pittman, David Salle, Do Ho Suh, and Erwin Wurm.
Merging the conceptual and the material within her Dark Earth series, Teresita Fernández sculpts raw charcoal into sumptuously textured, abstracted images that challenge conventional notions of landscape art traditions. These panoramic scenes expand and contract to suggest ancient mountain ranges, bodies of flowing water, subterranean minerals, radiant skies, and the immensity of the cosmos. Currently, Fernandez is the subject of a mid-career survey exhibition, Elemental, at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona, co-organized with the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), and an upcoming solo exhibition at Lehmann Maupin in New York opening on November 12.
By combining figuration with a varied pictorial language, David Salle creates complex visual narratives that draw inspiration from art history, advertising, design, and American culture. In works like The Scarecrows (2006), Salle exemplifies his continued commitment to exploring the thematic and formal possibilities of painting, and the development of his rich visual language. Also included in the presentation are recent paintings by Billy Childish, whose work is featured in the gallery’s new space in London at Cromwell Place. Pulling from themes found throughout art history—the bather, a lone figure in a landscape, a sunset—Childish presents intensely personal vignettes that feel archetypical, vibrating with the kinetic energy of a moment lived.
This presentation also creates a bridge to significant exhibitions of the artists’ work globally, including OSGEMEOS’ survey exhibition Segredos at Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil; Erwin Wurm’s retrospective exhibition Erwin Wurm: Photographs at Maison Européenne de la Photographie; and Lee Bul’s upcoming survey exhibition Utopia Saved at The Manege Central Exhibition Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia.
