From Sehgal and Kusama to Koh and Neel, Frieze 2013 Dealers Bring Top-Tier Works
By Eileen Kinsella
A high-profile roster of international dealers is pulling out all the stops for the second edition of Frieze New York, which runs from May 10 to 13 on Randall’s Island. Amid the schedule of commissioned projects, and daily lectures and talks, all eyes will be on who shows what top-tier pieces in the fair’s main section, under the bespoke white tent designed by Brooklyn architecture firm SO-IL.
Among the most highly anticipated happenings is a solo show by performance artist Tino Sehgal at first-time exhibitor Marian Goodman Gallery. Sehgal will present “Ann Lee,” 2011, the human realization of a Japanese manga character in the form of an adolescent girl who interacts with the audience and poses questions.
Lehmann Maupin’s two-person show will consist of new work by Teresita Fernández — large-scale drawings in India ink that explore the cultural significance of gold — alongside Korean artist Do Ho Suh’s life-size, olive-green, polyester replica of three corridors in the 18th-century apartment where Suh lived during a Berlin residency. Highlights at Sean Kelly Gallery will include sculptures by Terence Koh (“Boy by the Sea,” 2008) and Peter Liversidge (“Before/After,” 2012), photography by Marina Abramovic, and works on paper by Cuban collective Los Carpinteros.
Paul Kasmin Gallery will unveil a new painting by Turkish artist and recent auction star Taner Ceylan, who just signed on with Kasmin and will have his first exhibition there in September. The gallery will also debut new “ROAD PAINT” artworks by James Nares and a just-completed work by Walton Ford: a ten-foot painting of a tiger.
Londoner Victoria Miro will bring to the tent Alice Neel’s 1964 portrait of a taxi driver, “Abdul Rahman,” in addition to Chris Ofili’s “Ovid-Actaeon,” 2011–12, one of a series of works inspired by Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”; Elmgreen & Dragset’s “New Museum,” 2012, part of a series in which color is taken from the wall of a particular venue and framed; and one of Yayoi Kusama’s signature style paintings, “Infinity Nets (Baoteo),” 2013.
Paris dealer Chantal Crousel will show work by roughly a dozen artists, including duo Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla’s “Shape Shifter,” 2013, compiled of used sandpaper sheets on canvas; several works on paper depicting animals by Mexican conceptual artist Abraham Cruzvillegas; and “Roiseau 4,” 2012, made of bamboo and bird feathers by one of Cruzvillegas’s mentors, Gabriel Orozco. Several editioned Orozco photos (silver dye and bleach prints) and a wide range of objects and works on paper by French artist Jean-Luc Moulène will also be presented at the booth.opT
Among the works that Galerie Eigen + Art, of Leipzig and Berlin, plans to spotlight are Ricarda Roggan’s 2012 photograph “Spot” and David Schnell’s oil on canvas “morgen,” 2012. The gallery hopes to create buzz with Birgit Brenner’s “Fliegen,” 2013, a mixed-media installation featuring a large fly.
