Gibert & George Pull a Hirst, Show at All the White Cubes By Sarah Cascone
Legendary British art duo Gilbert & George are taking over White Cube's four galleries this spring. A mega-gallery devoting all of its locations to one show is a new phenomenon: Gilbert & George's "London Pictures" follows Gagosian's "Damien Hirst: The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011," which showed simultaneously in the gallery's eleven international venues earlier this year. Hirst is a White Cube artist.
"London Pictures," a series of 292 images, superimpose found newspaper headlines photos over photographs of the artists in their usual formal attire.??The exhibition will open simultaneously at White Cube's three London locations, and their Hong Kong outpost. Following its run at White Cube, "London Pictures" will travel to New York for Gilbert & George's first gallery show in the city since 2004. There, the exhibition will be held concurrently at both Lehmann Maupin locations and at Sonnabend Gallery.??No word as to whether you get a prize for visiting all four shows.
