Lehmann Maupin announces its new seasonal space in Milan, opening April 12, timed to the opening of both Miart and Salone del Mobile, and ahead of the 60th Venice Biennale Foreigners Everywhere, which will include gallery artist Kim Yun Shin. This space marks the gallery’s first physical location in Italy and follows the success of recent pop-ups in Aspen, Palm Beach, Taipei, and Beijing.
Lehmann Maupin Milan will be housed at Circolo, a non-profit organization spearheaded by Nicole Saikalis Bay, located on 48 Via della Spiga, near Giardini Indro Montanelli. The exhibition will be on view through June 21, with a group presentation featuring gallery artists Hernan Bas, Loriel Beltrán, Mandy El- Sayegh, Todd Gray, Alex Prager, and Nari Ward. Nearby, Ward’s retrospective exhibition is on view at Pirelli HangarBicocca through July 28, 2024.
Throughout its 28 year history, Lehmann Maupin has established deep roots across Europe—through its artists who live in the region, including Shirazeh Houshiary, Gilbert & George, Kader Attia, and Chantal Joffe, international exhibitions like the Venice Biennale, participation in art fairs including Art Basel and Frieze London, and most recently, through the opening of Lehmann Maupin London in 2020, which marked the gallery’s first permanent exhibition space in Europe. Last year, Isabella Icoz was promoted to Partner, overseeing the London gallery and its European activities. In the coming months, Lehmann Maupin will launch a new pop- up location on Cork Street, strategically positioned in the heart of Mayfair.
Rachel Lehmann, co-founder of Lehmann Maupin, reflects on the significance of Milan in the art world, stating, “Milan holds a unique position in the arts and culture industry. It’s known for its constant reinvention of design and contemporary art, and it has quickly evolved into a dynamic cultural hub with a fast growing economy. The city is home to many significant museums and private collections, which is a draw for a global audience of collectors, curators, and fellow galleries alike. Our decision to open a pop-up space in Milan aligned first and foremost with the needs of our artists and our commitment to always looking for new avenues to introduce wider audiences to our rich program.”
The gallery’s Milan space will be spearheaded by gallery partner Jessica Kreps, who states, “Our new pop-up space in Milan is a testament to our commitment to engage with diverse global art scenes and introduce our artists to new geographies. This venture in collaboration with Nicole Saikalis Bay will allow us to present several of our artists in Italy for the first time, including Venezuelan-American artist Loriel Beltrán and London-based artist Mandy El-Sayegh, as well as highlight new works by artists with major museum shows this year, like Nari Ward and Hernan Bas. The city’s proximity to Venice was also a natural factor in our decision making—we want to capitalize on this special moment in the art world.”
The space will feature a group exhibition of new works by international artists from our program. Highlights include: a room-sized presentation of new works by Nari Ward; a new painting by Miami-based artist Hernan Bas, whose solo exhibition is currently on view at The Bass Museum, Miami; new works by Mandy El-Sayegh, who recently published her first monograph in partnership with Black Dog Publishers; new works by Loriel Beltrán, Billy Childish, and Alex Prager; plus works from new series by Catherine Opie and Todd Gray, who completed residencies at the American Academy in Rome in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
In addition to the new pop-up space, Lehmann Maupin celebrates its artists’ activity across Italy, including: Nari Ward’s retrospective exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan; and Kim Yun Shin’s participation in Foreigners Everywhere, the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
