Lehmann Maupin Taipei
Kimpton Hotel Da An, 1F No. 25, Alley 27,
Section 4, Ren Ai Road Da’an District, Taipei
August 3 – September 18, 2021
Lehmann Maupin presents its new seasonal exhibition space in Da’an District, Taipei, opening August 3 and continuing through September 18. The pop-up marks Lehmann Maupin’s first physical location in Taipei and offers a bridge between the gallery’s global programming and the vibrant local cultural scene. Lehmann Maupin Taipei is located on the ground floor of the Kimpton Hotel Da An, designed by the Shanghai-based architects Neri & Hu. During the course of the summer the gallery will mount two curated presentations in the space.
Opening in Hong Kong in 2013, Lehmann Maupin was one of the first Western galleries to enter the Asian market. Since then, the gallery has expanded its operations to Korea, opening a location in Seoul in 2017 and further increasing its activity with staff based in Beijing and Shanghai. For the past decade, artists on the gallery’s roster have gained heightened visibility through solo and group museum shows, biennials, and regional art fairs. Following two major institutional moments (Erwin Wurm’s solo exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Tony Oursler’s 2021 retrospective at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts), as well as consistent participation in the region’s Taipei Dangdai art fair, the gallery is strengthening its position in Taipei. Nestled in the city’s bustling cultural, residential, and commercial hub, the pop-up exhibition space in Da’an District is housed near other galleries and major cultural institutions, namely Jut Art Museum, Fubon Living Art Space, Taishin Foundation for Arts & Culture, and Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab.
“When I think about Taipei, I think about its highly sophisticated, informed, and motivated collectors who come from a long history of arts patronage,” says gallery co-founder Rachel Lehmann. “David [Maupin] and I hope to introduce our artists to this established scene and open up a new dialogue and creative exchange. Over our 25-year history, Lehmann Maupin has given many artists their first exhibitions in Asia, including Catherine Opie, Marilyn Minter, Kader Attia, Teresita Fernández, and Nari Ward.”
Shasha Tittmann, Director of Lehmann Maupin Hong Kong will be spearheading the gallery’s space in Taipei. “Local collectors in Taipei have amassed some of the most-impressive collections I’ve ever encountered, ranging from antiquities to Modern European art, with a particular interest in contemporary art within the past couple of decades,” explains Tittmann. “Taiwanese collectors drive a large portion of the art market in Asia via auctions and private sales and are very active in the international scene—the Venice Biennale, Art Basel in Switzerland, etc. In a time where travel is not possible, our approach is to bring our international and multidisciplinary program directly to them.”
Lehmann Maupin Taipei’s inaugural presentation, States of Being, from August 3, 2021 will showcase an exploration of performance, theatre, and contemporary storytelling from within the gallery’s roster, including Billy Childish, Tony Oursler, Alex Prager, Robin Rhode, David Salle, and Erwin Wurm, as well as Tom Friedman. The exhibition will feature David Salle’s complex narrative paintings, which draw inspiration from art history, advertising, design, and American culture, in conversation with Tony Oursler’s exploration of the moving image through an intimately-scaled video installation. Also on view will be an iconic participatory sculpture by Erwin Wurm, where audiences are invited to activate the work by standing underneath it, alongside a human-scale stainless steel sculpture of two figures dressed in hazmat suits by Tom Friedman.
The second presentation, The Medium is Memory, opening in August 28 will explore concepts of memory and identity within each artist’s practice and feature a selection of works by McArthur Binion, Shirazeh Houshiary, Lee Bul, Angel Otero, Helen Pashgian and Do Ho Suh. Essential to this presentation are signature works from Lee Bul’s renowned Perdu series, in which she explores the binary between the artificial and the organic, both conceptually and materially. Works from the Perdu series were recently exhibited in New York at Lehmann Maupin and in the artist’s 2019 exhibition at Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin. McArthur Binion’s DNA series will also be shown. In these paintings, the artist creates minimalist patterns over an "under conscious" of his personal documents and photographs, in this case, the address book he kept from the 1970s to 1990s while living in New York. Also on view will be signature works from Do Ho Suh’s Specimen series—exquisitely sewn fabric versions of household objects, such as refrigerators, light fixtures, or stovetops.
The gallery will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM and will offer extended hours by appointment on Sundays and Mondays. For more information, please contact taipei@lehmannmaupin.com.
