“Since 1973… I have positioned my work not so much between, but alongside, pure abstraction and figurative imagery” — McArthur Binion
Lehmann Maupin presents Beyond Form, an exhibition that gathers eight artists who explore notions of abstraction: Loriel Beltrán, Sanford Biggers, McArthur Binion, Frank Bowling, Lee Bul, Angel Otero, Vaughn Spann, and Zhang Huan. The works on view, which span painting, embroidery, photography, and mixed media, reflect limitless formal possibilities. Beyond Form contests abstraction’s traditional history by invoking content beyond form. Personal and public narratives are present, and the haptic emerges through tactile surfaces and unconventional materials, pushing the limits of abstract materiality to conjure the personal and the communal at once.
