A New Permanent Installation by Lee Bul
A Fragmentary Anatomy of Every Setting Sun
at Hara Museum ARC (Gunma)
Hara Museum ARC is currently in production of a permanent installation work by Korean artist Lee Bul entitled "A Fragmentary Anatomy of Every Setting Sun" which is scheduled to open to public view in the entrance lobby of the museum in late March 2010. In addition to performance, Lee Bul makes three-dimensional works using a variety of materials such as silicon, glass beads and ceramic -- works that are artificial and richly ornamental, and which express her concern for the human body and interest in the cyborguesque form. The work will be the most recent and the largest in the artist's "Infinity" series of sculptural works which makes use of lightbox. The sculptural work, encased in a steel case, makes use of two-way mirrors to create the illusion of fragmentary architectural structure repeating and receding into infinite space. This series of work continues the artist's engagement with the fractured tropes and narratives of utopian modernity, in particular what she sees as the "melancholic traces of the collapse and disintegration of progressive projects to reinvent the world."
