VIDEO: A "Modern Painters" Take on Frieze New York By: Kristen Boatright
Tens of thousands of art enthusiasts will trek out to New York City’s Randall’s Island this weekend to see the work of hundreds of artists from nearly 200 galleries from around the world. "Modern Painters" Editor-in-Chief Daniel Kunitz chooses his favorites in this video tour of Frieze New York 2014.
Some of his highlights include Eric Fischl at London’s Victoria Miro Gallery, whose “Art Fair: Booth #1 Play/Care, 2013” is a preview of his upcoming exhibition “Eric Fischl: Art Fair Paintings,” which opens in October. Kunitz also spoke with Takeshi Murata whose “Melter 3-D” is getting some attention at San Francisco-based Ratio 3’s booth. Paris’s Galerie In Situ is presenting a collaborative booth featuring the work of Damien Deroubaix, Meschac Gaba and Otobong Nkanga. And, New York’s Lehmann Maupin is showcasing Chinese artist Liu Wei’s found material “Library” sculptures. The one-ton sculptures are composed of compressed books found at second-hand stores in Wei’s native Beijing.
