Lehmann Maupin is pleased to return to West Bund Art & Design 2020 for the third year with a selection of new and signature works by McArthur Binion (United States), Billy Childish (United Kingdom), Mandy El-Sayegh (United Kingdom), Shirazeh Houshiary (United Kingdom), Lee Bul (South Korea), Marilyn Minter (United States), Arcmanoro Niles (United States), OSGEMEOS (Brazil), Angel Otero (United States), Tony Oursler (United States), Suh Se Ok (South Korea), and Lari Pittman (United States).
Central to this presentation is a selection of works by celebrated South Korean artist Lee Bul from her Perdu series that blend biomorphic and cybertronic forms, vividly yet delicately rendered in acrylic paint, and mother of pearl. For decades, Lee Bul has worked across a diverse range of media—from drawing, sculpture, and painting to performance, installation, and video—to explore universal themes including the utopian desire to achieve perfection through technological advances and the dystopic suspicions and failures that often result. For example, the effect of the reflective surfaces of Civitas Solis III11 (2015), included in this presentation, challenges the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, giving way to the infinite possibilities of human will and imagination. Notably, The Manege Central Exhibition Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia, will host the survey exhibition Lee Bul: Saved Utopia, opening November 17.
Highlighted in this presentation is All Connected (2020), a brand-new work by OSGEMEOS. Using a rich symbolic visual language marked by bright colors and intricate patterns, the artists are often inspired by the vivid dreams that, as twins, they frequently share. OSGEMEOS’ work was recently the subject of a major survey show at Storage by Hyundai Card in Seoul, marking their first exhibition in Korea; a recent solo exhibition at Lehmann Maupin in New York; and is currently on view at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, one of the most important art museums in Brazil.
On view will be McArthur Binion’s grid paintings, which at first glance appear composed in a minimalist style, but upon further inspection reveal densely layered, multimedia works with extensive reference to the artist’s personal history. In DNA:Study (2019), Binion has carefully layered pages from his personal address books from the 1970s through the 1990s. Binion’s forthcoming monograph, McArthur Binion: DNA (DelMonico Books), will be published in January 2021.
Similarly, Angel Otero employs various methods of collage to build up the surfaces in his process-based paintings and sculptures, as evident in the monumental Bohemian Scandal (2018). In this way, the paint itself emerges as a crucial conceptual component, mobilizing ideas of chance, conveyance, and aesthetic vernacular, while the images and themes it visualizes become fragments or parts of a history energized by the material.
This year’s edition of West Bund Art & Design coincides with two major in-person exhibitions in Shanghai: Liu Wei’s anticipated survey exhibition, OVER, at the Long Museum West Bund; and the upcoming group show Noire Lumière, featuring works by Tony Ourlser, at HOW Art Museum.
