Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its fifth participation in the Frieze Art Fair, from 16 through 19 October 2008. Here we will present a selection of work by gallery artists, featuring special installations by Hernan Bas, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Do Ho Suh and Ashley Bickerton as well as work by Mickalene Thomas, Juergen Teller, Anya Gallaccio and Shirazeh Houshiary.
In anticipation of his first exhibition with Lehmann Maupin in May, Hernan Bas will present the film A Fairy's Tale. The dual projection film captures momentary glimpses into personal experiences as a way of exploring larger concepts about youth and environment.
Tracey Emin will present a new painting in her signature style as well as works on paper and neons. Tracey Emin 20 Years is currently on view at the Scottish National Gallery of Art through 9 November. This critically acclaimed exhibition will travel to CAC Málaga and Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2009.
Teresita Fernández's sculptures explore her continued interest in architectural forms and natural phenomena. Fernández continues to utilize materials like glass and metals and here she will present a large sculpture of precision cut stainless steel alongside cabochons of glass. The prestigious Benesse Art Site Naoshima has commissioned Fernández for a permanent sculpture on the unique location alongside the works of Walter de Maria and James Turrell. Upcoming projects also include her traveling retrospective opening at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL opening in 2009 and the completion of a large-scale commission at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas in Austin.
Do Ho Suh is currently included in Metamorphosis at Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris and in June 2009 the artist will curate the galleries of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Here we will exhibit a new suite of drawings and a remarkable stainless steel table.
One of the largest sculptures to date by the artist Ashley Bickerton will also be shown for the first time at the fair. This nearly 10-foot-long hammerhead shark will hang from the booth outfitted in an industrial orange netting and is adorned with coconuts and other paraphernalia—this following a successful exhibition at the gallery last spring and in anticipation of exhibitions at the Palazzo Grassi and Tate Modern, both in 2009.
Mickalene Thomas will use 3-D mixed media works to explore notions of identity and the female self alongside imagery of famous African-American figures. Currently being shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Thomas is preparing for her first exhibition with the gallery at our 540 West 26th Street space. Recently her work was exhibited at the Renaissance Society in Chicago, New Orleans Contemporary Art Center and The Brooklyn Museum.
Also on view will be a special installation by photographer Juergen Teller as well as new paintings by Shirazeh Houshiary. Recently Houshiary completed a major commission for St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London and will be giving a talk at the Guggenheim Museum in November. Anya Gallaccio will also present a new sculpture and recently closed her solo exhibition at the Camden Arts Centre in London.
