Lehmann Maupin will participate in the second edition of ArtInternational (Booth C15) from September 26-28, with a dynamic, multi-artist booth featuring new work by Kader Attia, Ashley Bickerton, Billy Childish, Tracey Emin, Teresita Fernández, Sonia Gomes, Angel Otero, Tony Oursler, Alex Prager, Robin Rhode, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Jennifer Steinkamp, Do Ho Suh, Mickalene Thomas, Nari Ward, and Erwin Wurm.
Anchoring the booth are artists whose works investigate the body’s relationship to both physical and physiological space. These artists, particularly Emin, Prager, Rhode, Steinkamp, and Suh, share a unique outlook that blends fact, fiction, and an exploration of memory to create an engaging perspective on reality.
Among the booth highlights are selections from Suh’s Specimens series, as well as his vibrant and intricate “thread drawings,” which explore depictions of the self and the self in relation to others, themes central to the artist’s practice. Suh’s most recent show with the gallery, Drawings, is currently on view at both of Lehmann Maupin’s New York locations through October 25, 2014. The artist also is exhibiting a major museum show at the Austin Contemporary, which is on view from September 20, 2014 through January 11, 2015.
A group of photographic prints by Robin Rhode will be exhibited, including Latimer’s Light (2014). The work, a series of photographs whose title references the African-American inventor Lewis Latimer, explores the proliferation, or lack thereof, of modern technology in the 21st century. Broadly referencing the situation in developing countries and neglected communities where even basic amenities, such as access to adequate lighting and guaranteed electrical power, are in short supply, Rhode’s work asks questions of the distribution of power, knowledge, and creativity. The artist’s debut exhibition with Lehmann Maupin in Hong Kong, having been there, is on view September 17–November 1, 2014.
