Lehmann Maupin returns to Art Basel Hong Kong for the 11th time with a presentation that foregrounds the gallery’s global approach by bringing together artists who work across New York, Seoul, Los Angeles, London, and beyond. These groundbreaking artists, including Lee Bul, Marilyn Minter, David Salle, and Sung Neung Kyung, are individually known for consistently pushing the limits of their respective disciplines. Here, the works on view explore the body as both subject and medium across performance, painting, and sculpture.
As part of the fair’s Kabinett sector, the gallery will present a curated selection of new paintings and an interactive sculpture by Marilyn Minter. Minter, whose debut exhibition in Seoul opens at Lehmann Maupin on March 7, explores what the artist calls “a pathology of beauty,” examining both societal gender norms and the art historical canon through images intended for pleasure.
Additional booth highlights include a selection of works by Korean experimental artist Sung Neung Kyung, who works across non-traditional media, including performance, photography, and archival practices, to examine constructions of knowledge and power. Sung’s work is prominently featured in the traveling exhibition Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s-70s, opening this February at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and he will subsequently have his first solo exhibition outside of Korea at Lehmann Maupin New York in fall 2024. On the heels of his recent solo exhibition World People in Seoul, the gallery’s presentation includes new paintings by acclaimed American postmodernist David Salle. Lehmann Maupin will also present new work by Korean artist Lee Bul, who was recently selected by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York for the 2024 Facade Commission.
The gallery’s presentation also includes a new silk work by Billie Zangewa, whose work is currently included in the exhibition Unravel at The Barbican Centre, London and was recently on view in a solo exhibition at SITE Santa Fe; new paintings by Mandy El-Sayegh, who recently published her first monograph in partnership with Black Dog Publishers; Los Angeles-based artist Lari Pittman, who will have a solo exhibition at the Long Museum in Shanghai, opening July 2024; and Erwin Wurm, whose solo exhibition at Fosun Foundation Shanghai opens June 2024.
