Lehmann Maupin New York will present the first solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles and Akwidaa, Ghana-based artist Todd Gray, following his representation announcement with the gallery in 2023. Gray’s photo sculptures weave together simultaneously existing histories, housed in juxtaposing sites of opulence and power in Europe and the US and historical Black spaces.
In this new body of work, Gray integrates images from deep within his own photography archive from the early 2000s and photographs taken during his fellowship at the American Academy in Rome in 2023. The mining of his personal archive—a new direction for Gray—offers a view into the influence of music history, featuring recognizable figures such as Al Green and Iggy Pop.
