From her studio in Easton, Connecticut, Tammy Nguyen speaks to us about her artistic process and her new series of paintings. In Stations of the Cross, currently on view in the Berlin Bienniale, Nguyen visually synthesizes Catholic iconography and her Vietnamese heritage. She describes the environments depicted in each scene as having their own agency—separate from the images of a well-known religious narrative—raising questions around the “truths” of prayer, salvation, and identity.
Nguyen joined Lehmann Maupin’s program in May 2022 and is known for her multidisciplinary practice, which encompasses paintings, drawings, artist books, prints, and zines, and seeks to explore states of confusion and distill diasporic identities.
