The master of famous surrealistic sculptures Erwin Wurm comes to Moscow. The exhibition "ABSTRACT ABSTRUSE” opens on September 6 at Winzavod. He is also announced as a special guest of V Moscow Biennale of contemporary art. Wurm ranks among the most influentual artists in fine art and is famous for his ironic criticism of the contemporary society.
Inflatable houses, fat cars and quaint human figures. Ordinary items form the basis of the artist`s works, which later change their sizes and shapes in a funny way. Wurm plays with viewers` perception and notes different sides of life which had been considered repulsive but became standard nowadays. According to Wurm, he is chiefly interested in everyday life. “Anything around me can be useful as well as different objects are part of the contemporary society. My works tell people about the whole entity of a human being: physical, spiritual, psychological and political.”
More than 30 works including famous houses and a new series of abstract works made of rubber sausages will be presented at the exhibition “ABSTRACT ABSTRUSE”. The works of a famous series “drinking sculptures” - which represent different hybrid of vintage furniture - will be brought for the first time. At the opening you will find a bottle of some beverage and a glass near every object. According to the artist, his sculptures will gain an artistic integrity in case visitors use them properly. All pieces are named after artists such as deKooning, Kippenberger, Munch, who had problems with alcohol and were literally killed by it. For Erwin Wurm it is humor and cynicism that became a critical method of research of contemporary world.
Erwin Wurm was born in Austria in 1954. Since 1995 he has combined artistic work with teaching as a professor of sculpture at leading European institutes. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including one-man exhibitions in MOMA in New York, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, participation in Lion Biennale and the 49 th Venice Biennale. In 2008 his works were presented in Moscow in a personal exhibition at Central House of Artists and in the 3d Moscow Biennale in 2009. Wurm lives and works in Vienna and New York.
The project “ABSTRACT ABSTRUSE” is held in the context of Austrian cultural season in Russia and is organized by Regina Gallery with the support of Austrian cultural forum, Raiffeisen bank and the Russian machines company.
