Preview: June 10–11, 2021
Public Days: June 12–13, 2021
For its debut participation in JINGART, Beijing, Lehmann Maupin will present new works by gallery artists McArthur Binion, Billy Childish, Mandy El-Sayegh, Gilbert & George, Shirazeh Houshiary, Lee Bul, Angel Otero, Lari Pittman, Do Ho Suh, and Nari Ward. Featuring a range of media, including painting, sculpture, and photography, this presentation highlights the gallery’s diverse program and showcases these artists’ commitment to defying traditional art-making practices and sociopolitical constructs.
In her Perdu works, Lee Bul explores the binary between the artificial and the organic, both conceptually and materially. Composed of organic and inorganic material such as mother-of-pearl, velvet, and acrylic paint, the artist’s otherworldly visions of fragmented bodies are seemingly caught in motion, at various distances and in differing detail. Recently, works from the Perdu series have been exhibited at Hong Kong Spotlight by Art Basel (2020), in the two-person exhibition, Recombinance: Mandy El-Sayegh and Lee Bul, at Lehmann Maupin New York, and in the artist’s major survey exhibition Lee Bul: Utopia Saved at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia. Earlier this year, Lee Bul’s work was the subject of the solo exhibition Lee Bul: Beginning at the Seoul Museum of Art in South Korea.
The gallery will also present a new large-scale painting by Lari Pittman from the artist’s most recent series. These works continue Pittman’s investigation of the history of humanity through the decorative arts by referencing traditional vanitas paintings, which include symbols of wealth, ephemerality, and death. Works like Vanitas #1 (2020) reflect on the meaning of everyday life and utilize elements like daffodils and jewelry to communicate hope, rebirth, and new beginnings. Pittman’s major retrospective, Lari Pittman: Declaration of Independence, opened at the Hammer Museum in 2019 and will soon travel internationally.
On view publicly for the first time at JINGART is RED PLACE (2020) from Gilbert & George’s newest body of work, NEW NORMAL PICTURES. In this series, the artist duo sets out on foot through London’s East End amidst the backdrop of the global pandemic. Provocative and packed with dark humor, the mixed-media works continue the artists’ decades-long quest to become a work of art themselves. Gilbert & George were recently the subject of a major retrospective, THE GREAT EXHIBITION, 1971–2016, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Daniel Birnbaum at Luma Westbau and Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland in 2020. This presentation will mark Gilbert & George’s first in Beijing, China since their solo exhibitions, China Exhibition 1993, at the National Art Gallery, Beijing and The Art Museum, Shanghai.
This presentation highlights gallery artists currently featured in significant global exhibitions, including Mandy El- Sayegh’s upcoming exhibition, Protective Inscriptions, at Lehmann Maupin Seoul (opening May 20, 2021), and a solo exhibition of new work at UTA Arts Space in Los Angeles, CA (opening October 2021); Nari Ward’s inclusion in the acclaimed Grief and Grievance, curated by the late Okwui Enwezor and currently on view at the New Museum in New York; and Do Ho Suh’s installation, Do Ho Suh: 348 West 22nd Street, on view at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), through May 16, 2021.
