Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its sixth participation in the Frieze Art Fair, from 15 through 18 October 2009. We will present a selection of works by gallery artists including, Gilbert & George, Christian Hellmich, Shirazeh Houshiary, Juergen Teller, Erwin Wurm and Tracey Emin, who will be offering a special commission exclusively for Frieze 2009.
Tracey Emin will present an exclusive project entitled "NEON LIFE: A Portrait," where she creates a unique neon especially and individually for the collector. Emin is known for her confessional art, revealing her very personal feelings in poetic phrases, which are in effect expressions of universal emotions. In these unique commissions, Emin will engage the collector in much the same way by asking the collector to respond to a series of intimate questions. In response to the collector's answers, Emin will create a working drawing of the neon, which will be provided along with the completed unique neon. This occasion marks the first time Emin has ever offered such personal commissions and they will be available at a special price during Frieze, where an example of the commission made especially for Lehmann Maupin partner, Rachel Lehmann, will be on view.
Following his recent exhibition with Lehmann Maupin entitled Paradis, Juergen Teller will present work from the show. Featuring Charlotte Rampling and Raquel Zimmermann, these nude studies feature the two women moving amongst the masterpieces housed in the Louvre Museum and captures the intimacy between photographer and subject. Shirazeh Houshiary will present a series of meticulous paintings and her nearly 5 meter tower sculpture Loom. In the Spring of 2010, Houshiary will have her fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. Renowned artist duo Gilbert & George will show their monumental work, Rosaceous from the Jack Freak Pictures. In advance of his second exhibition opening in January 2010 at Lehmann Maupin, Christian Hellmich will have a selection of new paintings on view including, Continental and Enklave. For the first time, Lehmann Maupin will exhibit the work of Erwin Wurm who has recently joined the gallery. The large, free-standing sculpture Ich and Uberich presents Wurm's unique and humorous approach to formalism. Wurm's work will also be on view at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau in Munich opening 17 October 2009.
